# Crafting: the Maker's Bench, the Forge and key recipes

Riventale has two crafting grids. The 2×2 grid in your inventory (`E`) makes boards, hafts, the Maker's Bench and a few simple blocks. Everything bigger needs the 3×3 grid of a placed **Maker's Bench**. Smelting happens in the **Forge**.

## How the grids work

- A recipe is a shape. It can sit anywhere in the grid: three boards across the top or across the middle make the same thing as long as the shape is the same.
- Axes and hoes work facing either way; most other shapes do not.
- The **recipe book** beside the grid lists everything, with a search box and a **Craftable** filter. Click a recipe to lay its ingredients into the grid; missing ones show as ghosts.
- Shift+click the result to craft as many as your ingredients allow.
- Hover over any item (or tap it on a touch screen) for a card with its tier, damage, armour, food value, fuel time and what it smelts into.

## The basics

- **4 Oak Boards:** Any log: oak, birch, pine or jungle (1 Oak Log)
- **4 Hafts:** Two boards, one above the other (2 Oak Boards)
- **Maker's Bench:** Four boards in a square (4 Oak Boards)
- **Forge:** Eight Fieldstone in a ring (8 Fieldstone)
- **Chest:** Eight boards in a ring (8 Oak Boards)
- **4 Torches:** Coal or charcoal above a haft (1 Coal, 1 Haft)
- **2 Lanterns:** A torch with iron (or copper) ingots above, below and to each side (4 Iron Ingots, 1 Torch)
- **Glowgourd:** A pumpkin above a torch (1 Pumpkin, 1 Torch)
- **4 Stone Bricks:** Four stone in a square (4 Stone)
- **Bookshelf:** Boards, hafts, boards in three rows (6 Oak Boards, 3 Hafts)
- **Boat:** A U of five boards (5 Oak Boards)
- **4 Bowls:** A V of three boards (3 Oak Boards)
- **Bucket:** Three iron ingots in a V (3 Iron Ingots)

## Tools and their tiers

Every tool uses the same shapes, with the material on top and hafts below. The wooden ones:

- **Wooden Pickaxe:** Three material across the top, two hafts down the middle (3 Oak Boards, 2 Hafts)
- **Wooden Sword:** Two material stacked over one haft (2 Oak Boards, 1 Haft)
- **Wooden Axe:** Two material on top, one beside a haft in the middle row, a haft below (3 Oak Boards, 2 Hafts)
- **Wooden Shovel:** One material over two hafts (1 Oak Boards, 2 Hafts)
- **Wooden Hoe:** Two material on top, two hafts down one side. Tills dirt into farmland (2 Oak Boards, 2 Hafts)
- **Wooden Dagger:** One material over one haft (1 Oak Boards, 1 Haft)

A better tier mines faster and hits harder, and some ores only drop for a good enough pickaxe. A pickaxe that is too weak shows the tool you need under the crosshair. Tools never break.

| Tier | Made from | Sword damage | Its pickaxe can mine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden | Oak Boards | 4 | Stone, Fieldstone, coal |
| Stone | Fieldstone or stone | 5 | Iron ore, copper ore |
| Iron | Iron ingots | 6 | Gold ore, Dawnstone ore, frost crystal ore |
| Gold | Gold ingots | 7 | The same as iron, faster |
| Dawnstone | Dawnstone | 8 | Moonstone ore, obsidian, glacite |
| Moonstone | Moonstone | 9 | The rarest ore, deepest in the stone |
| Tungsten | Tungsten ingots | 11 | Everything above, faster |
| Obitite | Obitite | 13 | Everything, fastest |

Gold sits above iron in Riventale: gold tools are stronger, not weaker. Between Moonstone and Tungsten there is one more, rarer tier, found in the deepest stone. Tungsten comes from the Robotic World and obitite from the Robot Titan; see [Biomes and lands](https://riventale.world/guides/biomes/) and [the Keepers](https://riventale.world/guides/keepers/#the-robot-titan).

## Bows, crossbows and daggers

How each one fights, the arrows and the backstab are in [the weapons guide](https://riventale.world/guides/weapons/). The recipes:

- **Recurve Bow:** Three hafts in a curve down one side, three string down the other (3 Hafts, 3 String)
- **Crossbow:** Iron, string, iron across the top; a board, then a haft below (2 Iron Ingots, 1 String, 1 Oak Boards, 1 Haft)
- **4 Arrows:** Flint over a haft over a feather (1 Flint, 1 Haft, 1 Feather)

### Elemental arrows

Four arrows round a Keeper's elemental ore make four elemental arrows: Tidal (Water Ore), Blazing (Fire Ore), Quaking (Earth Ore) and Gale (Wind Ore). What they do is in [the weapons guide](https://riventale.world/guides/weapons/#elemental-arrows).

- **4 Tidal Arrows:** Four arrows round a Water Ore (4 Arrows, 1 Water Ore)
- **4 Blazing Arrows:** Four arrows round a Fire Ore (4 Arrows, 1 Fire Ore)
- **4 Quaking Arrows:** Four arrows round an Earth Ore (4 Arrows, 1 Earth Ore)
- **4 Gale Arrows:** Four arrows round a Wind Ore (4 Arrows, 1 Wind Ore)

### Daggers and the backstab

Every tier that has a sword has a dagger: one material over one haft. The numbers are in [the weapons guide](https://riventale.world/guides/weapons/#daggers-and-the-backstab).

## Armour

Armour comes in five pieces: helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots and **gauntlets**. Gauntlets also make every hit you land stronger. There is wooden, iron, gold, Dawnstone, moonstone, tungsten and obitite armour, but no stone armour.

| Piece | Shape |
|---|---|
| Helmet | Three across the top, one at each side below |
| Chestplate | One at each side on top, then two full rows |
| Leggings | Three across the top, then one at each side for two rows |
| Boots | One at each side, two rows |
| Gauntlets | One at each side of a single row |

Tungsten and obitite armour go past the usual armour limit: each tungsten piece takes off another 2% of damage, each obitite piece 4%. A full set of tungsten makes you immune to robot lasers, the Titan's included. A full set of obitite makes you immune to lava.

## The Vael Lens Lectern

The **Vael Lens Lectern** makes gear better. Build it at a Maker's Bench from four Dressed Chalkstone, two gold ingots, two moonstone and one piece of the rarer ore that lies below the moonstone. It gives light, and its lens floats over it. Right click it, pick a weapon, a tool or a piece of armour you carry, and pay. The price is shown before you pay, and paying always works: no chance, nothing lost.

| Level | Price |
|---|---|
| I | 4 Gold Ingots, 2 Dawnstone |
| II | 3 Moonstone, 2 Dawnstone |
| III | 2 of the rarer ore below the moonstone, 3 Moonstone |

| Track | Items | I · II · III | Against players |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keen | Swords, daggers, axes, bows, crossbows | +1 · +2 · +3 damage to creatures | At most +1: +0 · +0.5 · +1 |
| Deft | Pickaxes, shovels, hoes, fishing rods | Work 10% · 20% · 30% faster. A rod gets bites that much sooner and lasts 20% longer a level | Not a weapon |
| Bulwark | Every armour piece, elemental armour and wings too | 3% · 6% · 9% less damage per piece; the whole set at most 25% | At most 5% for the whole set |

Each item has one track: an axe is a weapon. The price is the same for every tier, so a wooden sword can be enhanced too, it's just a poor deal. An enhanced item shows gold pips in its slot and its level in its name (Keen II Iron Sword), and keeps its level when it is dropped, stored or handed to a friend. A material you have never held shows as ??? until you find one. Spells are enhanced at the Lectern too, in its Spells tab.

## The Forge: smelting

Shift+click sends ore to the Forge's top slot and fuel to the bottom slot. Every item takes five seconds.

| Put in | Get out |
|---|---|
| Iron, gold, copper or tungsten ore | An ingot of that metal |
| Fieldstone | Stone |
| Stone | Dressed Stone |
| Stone Bricks | Worn Stone Bricks |
| Cobbled Slate | Slate |
| Sand | Glass |
| Clay Ball / Clay | Brick / Terracotta |
| Any log | Charcoal |
| Cactus | Green Dye |
| Raw Pork, Raw Beef, Raw Chicken | Roast Pork, Roast Beef, Cooked Chicken |
| Potato | Baked Potato |
| Riverfish, Silver Perch, Mudcat | Cooked Riverfish, Cooked Silver Perch, Cooked Mudcat |
| Driftwood, Rusted Vael Gear | Charcoal, an iron ingot |

| Fuel | Burns for | Items smelted |
|---|---|---|
| Lava Bucket (the empty bucket stays in the fuel slot) | 500 s | 100 |
| Coal Block | 400 s | 80 |
| Coal or Charcoal | 40 s | 8 |
| Chest, Bookshelf, Boat | 15 s | 3 |
| Log, Oak Boards, Maker's Bench | 7.5 s | 1.5 |
| Wooden tool | 5 s | 1 |
| Haft, Bowl | 2.5 s | 0.5 |

## Buckets

A **Bucket** is three iron ingots in a V. Use an empty one on a still liquid to pick it up: water, lava, oil or acid. Use a full one on a block to pour it beside that block; poured into grass, a flower or a torch, the liquid washes it away and it drops. A poured liquid falls straight down into any gap below it. Empty buckets stack to 16, full ones to 1.

| Bucket | Fill it from | What else it does |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Any water | Poured beside acid, it turns that acid into Rust Rock |
| Lava | Lava pools and lakes | A Forge fuel: 100 items, then the bucket comes back |
| Oil | Oil in the Robotic World | Fills a worn jetpack in one go |
| Acid | Acid pools in the Robotic World | Hurts whoever stands in it; robots don’t mind |
| Milk | Use an empty bucket on a cow | Drink it to clear every effect, good and bad, the Sun Shield too. You keep the bucket |

In a world with other players, a bucket follows the claim rules: in someone else’s claim you can’t pick up or pour until they `/trust` you, and liquid you pour never flows into a claim. Lava and acid poured outside your own claim dry up after 10 minutes. Nobody can pour lava or acid within 3 blocks of a player who isn’t on their team, and within 40 blocks of the world spawn only water can be poured. Alone, none of these limits apply.

## Food

Food fills the hunger bar on Medium and Hard (on Easy it heals you instead). The bar holds ten drumsticks; the numbers below are drumsticks.

| Food | Fills | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Roast Pork, Roast Beef, Pumpkin Pie | 4 | Smelt raw meat; a pumpkin alone in the grid makes a pie |
| Cooked Chicken, Mushroom Broth, Sun Carrot | 3 | Broth: red mushroom over brown mushroom over a bowl. Sun Carrot: a carrot ringed by 8 gold ingots |
| Bread, Baked Potato | 2.5 | Bread: three wheat in a row |
| Apple, Sunapple | 2 | A Sunapple (an apple ringed by 8 gold ingots) also heals 2 hearts at once |
| Carrot, Snowberries | 1.5 | Wild on the plains; snowberry bushes in the snow |
| Hedgeberries, Melon Slice, Cookie | 1 | 8 cookies: wheat, hedgeberries, wheat in a row |
| Cooked Silver Perch | 3 | Smelt a Silver Perch |
| Cooked Riverfish, Cooked Mudcat | 2.5 | Smelt the raw fish ([fishing](https://riventale.world/guides/cooking-and-fishing/#fishing)) |

Eleven foods also give an effect, from the Sunapple's golden hearts to a Cookie's Swiftstep: see [effects and food](https://riventale.world/guides/effects/#food). The Hearth Pot's dishes give effects too. One wheat in the grid gives two seeds. Plant seeds, carrots and potatoes on farmland; each stage takes about a minute and a half to grow.

## The Hearth Pot

The **Hearth Pot** cooks dishes of several ingredients: eleven of them, two servings a pot. Its recipes, how to learn them and every dish are in [cooking and fishing](https://riventale.world/guides/cooking-and-fishing/#the-hearth-pot).

- **Hearth Pot:** Four iron ingots down the sides of the top two rows, three bricks below (4 Iron Ingots, 3 Bricks)

## Fishing

A **Fishing Rod** lasts 64 casts; three Lakeweed, a fishing catch, twist into a string. How to cast, strike and reel, and the whole catch table, are in [cooking and fishing](https://riventale.world/guides/cooking-and-fishing/#fishing).

- **Fishing Rod:** Three hafts on a diagonal, two string down the side (3 Hafts, 2 String)
- **String:** Three Lakeweed in a row (3 Lakeweeds)

## Recipes worth knowing later

- **Claim Stone:** Eight stone bricks round an iron ingot. Protects the 33×33 columns around it, top to bottom; up to three each (8 Stone Bricks, 1 Iron Ingot)
- **Songstone:** A gold ingot between two stone bricks, three stone bricks below ([the Songstone](https://riventale.world/guides/songstone/)) (5 Stone Bricks, 1 Gold Ingot)
- **2 Moonstone Orbs:** Four moonstone round a glass block. Takes you to a friend, a home, or where you last died (4 Moonstone, 1 Glass)

- **Swift Ward:** A Feather on top, a gold ingot between two Dressed Greystone, Dressed Greystone below ([Wards](https://riventale.world/guides/effects/#wards)) (1 Feather, 3 Dressed Greystone, 1 Gold Ingot)
- **White Wool:** Four string; recolour it with any dye (4 String)
- **Jetpack:** Six obitite round a Laser Cannon Core. Fuelled with oil; hold jump in the air to fly (6 Obitite, 1 Laser Cannon Core)

The Keepers' ores make elemental gear: an obitite sword, pickaxe, axe or shovel beside a Keeper's ore makes an elemental tool, and the Poison Sword takes all four ores, two obitite and a haft. What each one does is in [the Keepers guide](https://riventale.world/guides/keepers/#elemental-tools).
