The Songstone

The Songstone is a block that plays Riventale's music: not all of it, only the songs you have heard where they belong. Every player gets one the first time they play a world. Place it, right click it (tap it on a phone), and choose a song.

A Songstone in the grass, with the hint: right-click, open the Songstone.
The Songstone window, 9 of 24 songs heard: songs grouped by place (The story, By day, By night, Under the stone, The wastes, Far lands, Keepers), newly heard songs marked New, unheard songs shown as question marks, Morning Fields playing with a progress bar, a Stop button and Repeat one, Play all and Shuffle buttons.

How songs are found

Each song belongs to a place. A song becomes yours once you have heard 30 seconds of it there (or all of it, for a shorter one): day songs by day in the middle lands, night songs at night, cave songs underground, and so on. When it happens, a message says "Song remembered" with your new count. Everyone starts with two: The Riven Crystal, the title screen's song, and Calm Middle Lands, the first day song.

Songs are kept with your character in that world, like torn pages and achievements. The count at the top of the window shows how many of the 24 you have.

KeepersWhen a Keeper risesA Keeper Rises

The day, night and cave songs come in turn as you play, so a few evenings in the middle lands and a long dig will fill most of the list. The last six take you further: to the Robotic World, to each of the four lands of the Elemental World, and to a Keeper's temple when it wakes. The biomes guide describes those places.

Playing a song

  1. Place the Songstone anywhere. Any pickaxe picks it back up.
  2. Right click it (tap on a phone) within eight blocks to open its window.
  3. Click a song. The stone lights up, notes rise from it and the song plays; a line above the hotbar names it.
  4. Choose how it goes on: Repeat one plays that song again and again, Play all goes on through your songs in order, Shuffle plays that song and then the rest in a random order.
  5. Press Stop to end it.

You hear a Songstone up to 24 blocks away, at full volume within 6 blocks, and the background music holds while it plays (a Keeper's music still wins). Walk away and it fades out; come back and it is still going. Songs you found since you last opened the window are marked New.

Songstones with other players

In an online world, a private world or an opened world, everyone near a playing Songstone hears the same song at the same moment. The stone plays the songs of whoever started it, so a friend who has been to the Volcano can play you its song before you have heard it there yourself (it only becomes yours when you hear it in its place). Anyone allowed to build there can stop or change a stone within reach; on claimed land that means the owner and the players they trust.

Making more Songstones

The starting Songstone is given once; losing it does not bring another. Craft more at a Maker's Bench:

SongstoneA gold ingot between two stone bricks on top, three stone bricks below

Stone bricks come from four stone in a square (smelt Fieldstone into stone first); gold ingots from gold ore below Y −32, or from desert temple chests. Songstones stack up to sixteen, so one for the house, one for the mine and one for the town square is easy.

Ideas

  • Put one by your spawn in an online world with Play all: everyone who passes hears it.
  • Put one in a long mine on Shuffle with the cave songs.
  • Play A Keeper Rises before a boss fight with friends, then go and earn it yourself.

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing plays: check the Music and Master volumes in Settings > Sound, and that Mute is off. Browsers only start sound after you have clicked or tapped the page once.
  • A song shows as ???: you have not heard 30 seconds of it in its place yet. Stay in that place (by day, at night, underground) until the "Song remembered" message appears.
  • The window will not open: stand within eight blocks of the stone. On claimed land, only the owner and trusted players can change it.
  • Two stones at once: you hear the nearest playing stone in range.
