The Titans

When the binders chained the elements in the Keepers, the shards of the Riven Crystal were left. Each one pulled its element’s land into a body, 48 blocks tall, and the binders could only sing them to sleep in stone cradles. They are the Shardborn, and every one you bring down sets its Shard free. Numbers below are for Medium.

Waking a Shardborn

A Shard Cradle seen from above its rim: a sunken arena ringed by obelisks, a Shardborn rising in it.
A Shard Cradle, its Shardborn rising.
  • Shard Cradles are sunken arenas 72 blocks across and 6 deep, ringed by four obelisks 24 blocks tall, in about one region in six of the Elemental World, far from the temples.
  • To wake one, stand at the cradle stone in its middle holding 4 of an element’s ore, with a block of the rarest ore in the stone in your bag, and use it. The ore chooses which Shardborn wakes. You must have beaten that element’s Keeper.
  • The call. Everyone in the Elemental World is told where, and for a minute the ground kindles. Then it rises: 14.5 seconds in single player, 6 online.
  • The fuel is the clock. 15 minutes of light burn down on its boss bar, with a warning at 12. When the light runs out it sinks back to sleep, and the fuel is spent.
  • One at a time. One Shardborn is awake in a world at a time. After a fight the world rests 10 minutes, and that cradle 30.

The fight

Climbing a kneeling Shardborn’s forearm towards the glowing heart in its chest.
On its forearm, climbing to the heart.
  • It walks. A step every 3 seconds, 7 blocks a stride, towards the nearest player. Each footfall is marked on the ground 1.5 seconds before it lands: under the foot crushes for 12, within 9 blocks shakes for 2.
  • The slam. Stand 8 to 22 blocks in front of it and it brings both fists down: marked 2.2 seconds ahead, 9 damage within 6 blocks.
  • Its body takes a tenth of every blow. Aim at the crystals.
  • The knees. Each knee crystal has 200 health. Break one and it kneels at the end of its step for 12 seconds (16 on Easy), holding still. Its knees grow back when it stands.
  • The heart. While it kneels its body is ground: climb its forearm to the heart, 16 blocks up. Blades strike the heart for triple, shots for half again.

It has 3,000 health against one player on Medium (1,800 on Easy, 3,900 on Hard), and 70% more for each player who joins the fight, up to eight. A fight in progress is not saved: a reload ends it, and the fuel is spent.

Fighting together

A Shardborn is built for a crowd. When one wakes, everyone in the Elemental World is told where its cradle lies, and anyone can join the fight while its light burns: up to eight players, each one adding 70% to its health. One player draws the Shardborn’s steps while the others break the knees; the moment it kneels, everyone climbs. The shoulders and the crown are a job for bows and crossbows while blades wait at the heart.

Everyone within 60 blocks of the cradle when the heart bursts takes the full reward, not a share of one, and each player’s first win over a Shardborn counts for them alone. A world holds one awake Shardborn at a time, so a second cradle waits until the world’s rest is over.

Old worlds and new land

Shard Cradles are part of the land itself, in old worlds as in new ones. Where a cradle would come within reach of land built on before the Titans update, that land is kept exactly as it was and the cradle stays out, so nothing changes under your builds; another region will hold one. The Keepers’ temples, their towers and their crystals are unchanged.

Rewards

  • Every win, for everyone within 60 blocks of the cradle when the heart bursts: 2-4 of its ore, the rarest ore, and up to 2 Moonstone.
  • The first win over each: its Shard (Tide, Blaze, Quake or Gale) and a Shardmantle for your shoulders.
  • All four: the Shardfall Cape and the title Titanbreaker.
  • Earned only, never sold. The Shardmantles and the cape wait in Looks.
