The Keepers · Fire

The Magma Colossus, Keeper of Fire

Fire did not run. It came at the binders, and as they chained it in the mountain of ash it pulled the molten rock round itself until it stood taller than the temple gates. A living volcano: a stepped cone of rock with a face of fire in its slope, a smoking crater for a crown and two great arms braced out of its flanks. 320 health, and the hardest-hitting Keeper.

The Magma Colossus in its temple: a stepped cone of rock with a face of fire and lava running down it.

Its moves

MoveWhat happensWhat to do
FireballA blazing ball from its mouth, 2.5 hearts, and 3 seconds of BurningSidestep; it flies straight
Magma barrageFive balls of magma rise out of its crater and circle it; it throws them one by one in high arcs: 10 hearts each to a player with no armour, with a burning splashWear your best armour. Watch the arcs and run across them, not along them
Ground slamThrows everyone within 6 blocks into the air and burns themDo not stand under it
Punch3 hearts up closeHit and step back
Phase two: eruptionFireballs rain from the sky around you every few secondsKeep moving; the first lands on your spot
  • BurningLose half a heart a second; water or rain puts it outIts fireballs, barrage and slam

Damage here is for Medium: Easy halves it, Hard adds half again.

Its second form

Below half health it erupts. It waits 40% less between moves, and fire falls from the sky around whoever it is fighting every few seconds, the first one on the spot where you stand. Standing still is the one mistake it never forgives.

How to beat it

  1. Break the four tower crystals first: each heals it 4 health a second while it stands.
  2. It throws the magma balls only at someone in range and in sight, so a wall breaks its aim. But a walking Keeper that loses sight of you for four seconds leaps at you: duck behind cover as the balls rise, then step out.
  3. Never stand within 6 blocks when it rears for the slam. Hit, step back, hit again.

Its barrage is the deadliest single blow any Keeper deals: wear a full set of your best armour, and carry Sunapples for the Sun Shield, whose wards take the hits first.

What it leaves

  • 2 to 4 Fire Ore: the Fire Chestplate (fire, lava and magma blocks cannot hurt you, and . throws your own fireball), Blazing arrows, a Blazing tool and, with the others, the Poison Sword.
  • 2 to 5 Obsidian and 1 to 3 Magma Blocks.
  • Everyone at the fight learns Cinderbolt, the Fire spell, and earns the Ember motes aura and its Keeper's Mark, looks that are never sold.
  • Beating it opens the Fire Titan's cradle: Blazewrought wakes only for a player who has.

Its temple's chests hold Dawnspar, Sunapples, farglasses and often a Torn Page: Page XIII tells how the Colossus was bound.

The others: The Rime Sovereign, The Thorn Guardian, The Tempest, The Robot Titan, The Crowned Wyrm. Back to the Keepers. All sections: the guides.
